Cops & Donuts

The joke about cops eating donuts is one of the oldest cop jokes around. Many people don't even know where the joke originated. But now, the rest of the story....

Many years ago, we didn't have 24 convenient stores located on every street corner. In fact, there were very few businesses that even stayed open after midnight. The only exception was.....you guessed it....the donut shops (Shipley's Donuts & Dunkin Donuts)!

Actually, the donut shops were not open 24 hours to the general public . These shops only allowed uniformed police officers to enter their shop after hours because it provided them with free security. Officers would stop by during the night for a cup of coffee and something to eat because there were no other places open during the early morning hours.

Citizens driving by a donut shop would see numerous police cars parked outside and thus, the cops and donuts joke was born!

These days, there are convenient store located on almost every corner and most are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The majority provide officers with free coffee and fountain drinks because they like having officers in the store -- free security.

Of course police officers enjoy donuts as much as the next person, so they can still be found hanging out at the local donut shop today.
